Rolex Explorer II 16570

The Explorer II is the younger sister of Rolex’s reliable adventurer’s timepiece, the legendary Explorer. The watch, released in 1971, was aimed specifically at cavers, although the second time zone was also useful to jetsetters. Larger and more rugged than its predecessor, the Explorer II also boasts a date window and an iconic 24-hour bezel. This model—reference 16570—dates to 1989, the very year this version was introduced, and includes legible black surrounds on the hour markers and the improved calibre 3185. Early versions of the 16570 have earned the nickname “Grain de Mais” in reference to the hour markers’ distinctive cream colour that resembles fresh grains of corn. This colouration is a welcome side effect of the luminous tritium paint aging. This is a fine example of an early and rare Explorer II.
